Automated Detection of Vortex Cores and Sepa- rated Flows in CFD Datasets

چکیده
In this paper, we describe new techniques for detecting vortices and regions of separated flow with application to visualization of large-scale computational fluid dynamics data sets. The vortex core detection algorithm is based on ideas derived from combinatorial topology, specifically, Sperner’s lemma. The algorithm to detect regions of separated flow is based on the assumption that each pair of separation and attachment lines has an associated vortex core and uses the new vortex core detection algorithm. Results are included for a representative problem demonstrating the efficacy of these approaches.

Automated Extraction of Flow Features NASA
The use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) has become standard practice in the design and development of the major components used for air and space propulsion. To aid in the post-processing and analysis of CFD results, many researchers now use automated feature extraction utilities. These tools can be applied in order to detect the existence of such features as shocks, vortex cores and sepa...
متن کاملRandom Vortex Method for Geometries with Unsolvable Schwarz-Christoffel Formula
In this research we have implemented the Random Vortex Method to calculate velocity fields of fluids inside open cavities in both turbulent and laminar flows. the Random Vortex Method is a CFD method (in both turbulent and laminar fields) which needs the Schwarz-Christoffel transformation formula to map the physical geometry into the upper half plane. In some complex geometries like the flow in...
متن کاملAutomated Detection of Multiple Sclerosis Lesions Using Texture-based Features and a Hybrid Classifier
Background: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is the most frequent non-traumatic neurological disease capable of causing disability in young adults. Detection of MS lesions with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the most common technique. However, manual interpretation of vast amounts of data is often tedious and error-prone. Furthermore, changes in lesions are often subtle and extremely unrepresentati...
متن کاملOn Contribution of Advanced Vortex Element Methods Toward Virtual Reality of Unsteady Vortical Flows in the New Generation of CFD
The purpose of this paper is to explain the attractive applicability of the advanced vortex element methods and their contribution to the beginning of the new generation of CFD, with introduction of epoch-making application of the methods to simulation of unsteady flows around bluff bodies and virtual operation of fluid machinery. The vortex methods have been developed and applied for analysis ...
متن کاملHaptic visualization of computational fluid dynamics data using reactive forces
Datasets from Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) can be post-processed and visualized to aid understanding of the flow phenomena present. Visualization of CFD data, however, often suffers from problems such as occlusion and cluttering when methods such as glyphing and volume rendering are applied. In this paper we present a case study where new modes for haptic interaction are used to enhance t...
